International Conference on Recent Developments in Clean and Safe Nuclear Power Generation at Hyderabad Telangana State Centre of the Institution organized International Conference on the topic ‘Recent Developments in Clean and Safe Nuclear Power Generation’ under the aegis of Electrical Engineering Division Board of IEI during October 3-5, 2018 at Hyderabad.

Mr M Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Vice President of India, graced the function as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the Conference. During his inaugural address, the Vice President highlighted that people require assured, uninterrupted and quality power instead of free power. ‘Rapid Urbanization and Industrialization would increase energy demand and consumption and to meet this demand, nuclear power finds a solution since it is cost effective and environment friendly’, he added. The Chief Guest cited examples of Tarapore and Kundankulam plants which are generating power at 92 paise and Rs. 3/- per unit respectively. Mr Naidu referred to the contribution of Dr Homi J Bhabha to the development of nuclear energy. He emphasized on the need to improve afforestation and green cover in the country. The Chief Guest further stated that to eliminate the carbon foot prints and global warming associated with the conventional method of power generation, nuclear power plant is the most feasible alternative. The Guest-of-Honour, Dr R Chidambaram, Former Principal Scientific Advisor, GOI, Homi Bhabha Professor, BARC , Mumbai elaborately explained about the need of the nuclear power and opined that nuclear power will grow by leaps and bounds in years to come. Mr Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Hon’ble Home Minister, Government of Telangana graced the Conference with his august presence. Mr Sisir Kumar Banerjee, President, IEI, in his address, emphasized upon the use of nuclear power to mitigate the effect of global warming and climate change. President further highlighted the transition of IEI to digital era through implementation of Digital Learning Materials for students, idea generation scheme ‘Ideathon’ and Life Long Digital Learning Portal for the members of IEI which will enable them to enhance their contribution towards Continuous Professional Development (CPD). He stressed that maintaining a healthy CPD is need of the hour as that will help them in obtaining the Professional Engineering & International Professional Engineers Certification by IEI. Mr T M Gunaraja, President Elect, IEI, in his speech appreciated the effort put by the host Centre for organizing the Conference in befitting manner and stated that the Centre should organize more activities for which all the support will be extended. Earlier, Dr S Satyanarayana, Chairman of IEI, Telangana State Centre, in his welcome address mentioned that the State Centre is actively participating in providing solutions to various contemporary issues faced by the society and offering constructive suggestions to the policy makers. He further highlighted that Telangana State Centre provided suggestions to Government on various issues like free power to farmers, Bolakpur – Kavadiguda Storm Water Floods, prevention of leakages and losses in the power sector, Hyderabad drainage and drinking water problems and many more. Dr G Rameshwar Rao, Honorary Secretary of the host Centre proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the function.
